Hasala - Designing a Seamless Financial Literacy Experience for Parents and Children
Hasala is a Saudi-based financial literacy app designed to empower children with the tools they need to learn about budgeting, saving, and responsible spending. The app also provides parents with the ability to track their child’s financial habits and guide them in their learning journey.
We were tasked with designing both the Parent’s Module and the Child’s Module, ensuring that each had a unique but complementary design that served the needs of both user groups. Our involvement in this two-month project included brand identity design, UI/UX design, interactive prototyping, and user flow structuring.
Creating a financial literacy app that caters to both parents and children presented a unique set of challenges. We encountered four key challenges during the project:
- Balance of Playfulness and Professionalism:
The first challenge was finding the right balance between making the app engaging enough for children without making it too playful or “childish” for parents. We had to design an app that would feel appropriate for both parents (who needed an interface focused on control and monitoring) and children (who needed an experience that was fun and interactive). Achieving this balance took multiple iterations, ensuring the design wasn’t overly serious or too playful. - Reward System Design:
The reward system was another significant challenge. We needed to develop a system that would incentivize children to complete tasks, like “Make your bed” or “Brush your teeth twice a day.” The challenge was creating a clear scoring system that allowed for smooth tracking of completed tasks and earned rewards. The system had to be intuitive for children to understand while motivating them to keep engaging with the app. - Seamless Parent-Child Interaction:
The Parent’s Module and Child’s Module had to be distinct in their functionality but also connected seamlessly. One of the challenges was ensuring that the parent’s role in assigning tasks and monitoring spending didn’t feel intrusive to the child. The challenge was in separating these journeys within the app while maintaining smooth transitions and functionality between the two modules. Clear demarcation in user flows and consistent visual cues helped resolve this issue. Client’s Indecisiveness Regarding Branding Colors:
One of the key challenges was the client’s indecisiveness around the color scheme for the branding, particularly the logo colors. We provided the client with several iterations of the logo and branding colors before they could settle on the final one. Each version was refined based on their feedback, with multiple color schemes being tested to find the perfect balance between professionalism and fun. This process took extra time and effort but ultimately resulted in a color palette that aligned with Hasala’s mission: to be both trustworthy and engaging for children.
Before delving into the UI/UX design, we first created a logo and established the branding for Hasala. This process involved understanding the app’s mission and vision, and translating that into visual identity. The goal was to craft a design that was trustworthy for parents while remaining friendly and playful enough for children.
The color palette we chose was a mix of deep blues and energetic accents, with a modern font to represent trust, education, and fun. This became the foundation for the overall app design.
Parent’s Module Design
The Parent’s Module had to be informative, intuitive, and easy to use. We focused on making the interface structured and organized to provide clear insights into the child’s financial progress, task completion, and funds.

- Financial Overview: A simple dashboard providing access to transactions, balance, and task progress.
Child’s Module Design
For the Child’s Module, we incorporated interactive elements and gamified features to keep kids engaged in the learning process.
Key features:
- Task Assignment & Tracking: Parents could assign tasks with specific rewards and track completion.
- Funds Transfer & Management: Easy-to-use interface for transferring pocket money and topping up balances.
- Financial Overview: A simple dashboard providing access to transactions, balance, and task progress.
- Task List: Children could check off tasks and earn points or funds.
- Reward System: Tasks were linked to rewards like pocket money, and kids could visualize their progress in a fun way.
- Spending & Saving: A simple balance view allowed children to understand money management through interactive spending and saving features.
Alongside the UI/UX design, we created interactive prototypes for both modules, simulating real-life usage scenarios. This allowed us to test navigation, task assignment, and reward tracking. The prototypes provided valuable feedback that informed the final design adjustments, ensuring both modules worked seamlessly together.
The result was:
- A Parent’s Module that was functional and easy to use for financial management.
- A Child’s Module that felt playful and engaging while educating kids about money management.
- A balanced design that was both professional for parents and engaging for kids.
A strong brand identity that was consistent across the app.
The Hasala project was an exciting journey that allowed us to combine UI/UX design with brand identity creation. The final design successfully balanced the needs of both parents and children, creating an engaging learning environment for kids while providing parents with the tools they needed for oversight.
